INDIA: Ammunition Depot Engulfed In Flames Taking At Least 17 Lives

A raging fire swept through an ammunition depot in Maharashtra’s Pulgaon causing several explosions. The incident took place on early Tuesday morning at around 1.30 am and at least 17 soldiers are feared to have lost their lives.

17 people were admitted to a nearby and according to a regional official, 2 are in critical conditions. Although the fire is now under control, thousands of villagers living in the vicinity have been asked to evacuate their houses.

Among those who lost their lives were two army officers who helped in fighting the fire while ensuring the protection of nearby inhabitants.

The death toll is still unknown as some parts of the depot have not been checked yet by the rescue teams.

India has witnessed several fire outbreaks during this year. The cause might be attributed to the steep rises in heat waves during summer time in the country. Severe drought conditions in several parts of India add up to this issue- a small spark is enough to lead to a huge fire outbreak when the land is highly dry.

India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi expressed his pain on Twitter and asked the Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar to visit the site. Meanwhile, an inquiry into the cause of the fire has been ordered.
