Unveiling the List – ISIS Participants from the West


ISIS, the radical Sunni group which exercises great control over the portions of Iraq and Syria, has received participation of more than 20,000 foreigners. According to Nicholas Rasmussen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center, fighters in an approximate number of 3,400 hailing from across 90 countries, some from Western states, have joined the terror group.

But nobody knows their names, the way they look, about their nationality or their purpose of joining in. Here we have a list of individuals who have traveled to join ISIS:

United States
As reported by the U.S. officials, a count of over 150 fighters have participated in the militant group. The identity of American fighters who have made it to ISIS-controlled lands is not yet disclosed, but a handful of people have been accused of trying.

Three men from New York – Akhror Saidakhmetov, 19; Abdurasul Juraboev, 24; and Abror Habibov, 30 are reported to be sent in police custody on Wednesday and have been charged with conspiracy to deliver resources as well as material support to a foreign terrorist organization. A report has been filed against them for discussing an attempt to assassinate, the US President, Barack Obama. Also, one among these had been reported to indulge in planning a plane hijack and handing it to ISIS.

Apart from them, four teenage women from Colorado are charged of attempt to joining ISIS. As per the investigators, they are recruited via social media, and last October they were prohibited from entering Germany and were sent on a flight back to the United States. Shannon Maureen Conley was once arrested in spring 2014 and is listed among one of the first Americans who were sentenced for conspiracy to support ISIS.

Two men who are reported by the analysts to appear in the terrible ISIS propaganda videos are suspected to be either from United States or Canada. They have appeared in the videos wearing masks revealing nothing except their eyes, and had a North American accent in their speech. One video showcasing the execution of a handful of men was entitled as “Flames of War”. Also in the first propaganda video, the other militant was the speaker and the video ends with the graphic beheading of over a dozen Egyptian Christians.

As estimated by Canadian Intelligence Agency, over 130 citizens have travelled to join ISIS. Damian Clairmont being one such aspirant, whose father got killed in a fight and later, he got converted into Islam. All the information was revealed by his mother to CNN. He was now gradually being recruited by the group. His mother also added that he was brainwashed and forced to join the group to save women and children.
Other fighters in their early 20s named – John Maguire and Khadar Khalib were accused in absentia by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for taking part in the activities of this terror group. As revealed by the authors, they are believed to be fighting with ISIS since long time and counseling other to join in.

Reports also disclosed details about a woman who was regular on tweeting support for this terror group from Toronto till last November. However, after a brief interval, the similar tweets were noticed coming from Syria.

Widow of Amedy Coulibaly, man who assassinated 4 people in Paris Kosher Market in January, Hayat Boumeddiene, is one of the far known French national who is now alleged to be in Syria. As reported by the ISIS propaganda magazine, Boumeddiene is supposed to disappear into Syria prior the attack and reach the militant group (also termed as the Islamic State), but the presumption has no proof.
The count of French fighters joining ISIS is around 1,200, but French authorities have so far disclosed only one man named Maxime Hauchard, who appeared in the video showcasing the graphic beheading of men, who were believed to be the pilots of Syrian Government. French authorities have taken back the claim of Mickael Dos Santos, another citizen, for being a member of ISIS.

As per the research group, around 600 UK nationals have travelled to Syria and Iraq to join ISIS. Among them, the black-clad, Jihadi John, a masked militant featured in the majority of ISIS’ beheading videos, is presumed to have strong connections with United Kingdom basis his London accent. Also, the U.S. and British officials have hinted to know his identity, but till now have not shared anything publicly.

Shamima Begum, 15; Amira Abase, 15 and Kadiza Sultana, 16, three classmates from London have departed from UK on February 17 for Istanbul. Police authorities suspect that they have reached their intended destination on Tuesday.

In September, Aqsa Mahmood, has also left her home to join the ISIS battlefield. Reportedly, she had bid goodbye to her parents the day she left, four days after which she reached Syria crossing the Turkish border to join the terror group as a martyr.

Australian authorities have reported a suspicion regarding 50 of its nationals who have travelled to the Syria and Iraq to become a part of ISIS. One of the prominent participants being, Khaled Sharrouf, who last year posted a photo of his 7-year-old son who held a man’s severed head tagging it as “That’s my boy.”

Germany reported joining in of journalist, author, and former German Politician Jürgen Todenhöfer to the group. In December, he is believed to travel to ISIS. Also, he had a conversation with CNN’s Frederik Pleitgen, on which a video has been shared.  He is believed to be one among the 600 participants from the country. Todenhöfer said, “He says, what they want him to say and he is sure he is going in the right way.”
